STARS 2019 Gold Accreditation

In October 2019, Sherington received its Gold Accreditation for STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe), TfL’s accreditation scheme for London schools and nurseries.

STARS inspires young Londoners to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely by championing walking, scooting and cycling. Through TfL STARS we focus on the benefits of walking, cycling or scooting to school, both for ourselves and for our environment. STARS supports pupils’ wellbeing, helps to reduce congestion at the school gates and improve road safety and air quality. In 2020, we hope to have the biggest turn out for our Walk To School Week (now rescheduled to October 2020) to keep our Gold accreditation for the next academic year.

What we do:

  • All local school trips are made by public transport where possible, or on foot if the destination is close by
  • We encourage all members of our school community to walk, scoot, cycle or travel by public transport to school
  • We promote safe and active travel as much as possible by using our newsletters and website
  • Where a car must be used, we ask all parents to drive only part of the way, park away from the school and walk the last few minutes of the journey (the ‘park and walk’ scheme)
  • We endeavour to reduce congestion and pollution at the school gates by working with the school community, Friends of Sherington (FOS), TfL STARS team, traffic enforcement and the local authority
  • We offer travel safety classes, and scooter and cycling training

2020 accreditation has not happened due to national school closures from COVID-19.

Walk to School Week

We are raising awareness about the physical and mental health benefits walking brings to our community, and to promote walking as a means of transport to reduce car congestion and pollution around our school.

We know 2020 has been a bit of a ‘different’ year and we were not able to participate in Walk to School Week in the summer as planned. Luckily, it took place in October and our Sherington community approached this challenge with enthusiasm and zest.
